The international community must find a solution to the Rohingya crisis, and that solution should be in Myanmar, said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.
"The situation in Myanmar is very difficult. There is a conflict going on, actually many, many conflicts are going on, but we must insist on having a solution," he told the media after a meeting with Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain at the foreign ministry today.
"We discussed the importance, which I have always agreed with, of finding solutions in Myanmar."
Filippo Grandi arrived in Bangladesh on Saturday for a five-day visit to discuss the Rohingya crisis in Bangladesh, which has been sheltering more than a million Rohingya since 2017 when they fled a brutal military crackdown in Myanmar's Rakhine State.
With the civil war worsening in Myanmar, nearly one lakh Rohingya fled to Bangladesh since July last year, further putting pressure on the country.
The UN has decided to hold a high-level global conference on the Rohingya crisis later this year amid declining funding for humanitarian aid.
During his visit, Filippo Grandi is set to discuss the Rohingya crisis with government officials and humanitarian agencies and also visit the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar and Bhashan Char.
After meeting the foreign adviser, Filippo said they discussed the situation of the Rohingya refugees and how to continue managing the very difficult situation.
"I expressed my gratitude to Bangladesh for continuing to host them, in spite of its own challenges linked to the transition, of course."
