The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh and the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) of Thailand today entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly foster international cooperation in the fight against corruption.
ACC Chairman Dr Mohammad Abdul Momen and NACC President Suchart Trakulkasemsuk signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organisations, according to a statement from the Chief Adviser's Press wing.
Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra witnessed the signing of the MoU on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Thailand.
ACC Chairman Abdul Momen expressed hope that the MoU would help both Bangladesh and Thailand fight corruption more effectively.
"Many Bangladeshi corruption suspects have taken shelter in some neighbouring countries. We believe this MoU will help track them down and bring them to justice," he said.
The MoU was signed with the aim of enhancing international cooperation, as specifically outlined in Article 48 of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, which encourages state parties to enter into bilateral and multilateral agreements for direct cooperation between their law enforcement agencies.
As per the MoU, Bangladesh and Thailand will provide each other with initial information relevant to the prevention of corruption, share best practices in information gathering, exchange information, initiate joint projects, share studies, and perform other cooperative activities as necessary for preventing and combating corruption.
