BNP conveyed to the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh that holding national elections within this year is highly urgent since a country cannot run itself under an undemocratic governance for long.
Ambassador Michael Miller visited the BNP chairperson's office in Dhaka's Gulshan around 3:30pm today. He met with the party's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Moyeen Khan and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, and the Chairperson's Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee Member Shama Obaid.
After the meeting, Amir Khasru briefed journalists highlighting BNP's stance on the importance of restoring democracy through the elections.
He said, "A country cannot run under an undemocratic process for long. Undemocratic governments lack political weight, mobilisation capacity, and public engagement. They don't receive feedback from the people. That is why we emphasised the urgency of transitioning to a democratic process as soon as possible."
The discussions also touched on the election roadmap, reforms, and state of the economy.
On reforms, Amir Khasru said, "Reforms that achieve consensus should be implemented immediately. There is no justification for delaying such measures."
Addressing economic issues, Khasru expressed BNP's willingness to support any economic initiatives taken by an interim government that benefit the country.
"BNP has its own economic programmes, which we will implement if we are elected by the people," he added.
In response to questions from the reporters, the leader said the growing acknowledgment of elections as the only solution to the country's ongoing political crisis.
"Everyone understands that there is no way out of the current situation without elections. That is why the subject of elections is being repeatedly brought up in discussions," he also said.
