Ashraf Islam Engineering Building Inaugurated

Last October, the "Ashraf Islam Building of Engineering" built at the Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tennessee, USA, named after Civil Engineer Ashraf Islam, a distinguished community leader and philanthropist of Bangladeshi origin, was inaugurated. Located at Tennessee Tech University's approximately 111,000 square feet of academic space, the building will be the largest engineering building constructed at the university in the past 50 years. Academic education program has already started in the building built in the name of Ashraf Islam, a former student of the university.

In a brief speech to mark the inauguration of the Ashraf Islam Engineering Building, he said, " Today this building at Tennessee Tech stands for what we can achieve through hard work, dedication and an incredible learning community." He further said "This facility is a beacon of hope and a promise of excellence in the education of the future generation of engineers so that students have access to various resources and the support they need." This building comes as the college of engineering is seen as an all-time record for enrollment .

Born in Bangladesh, Ashraf Islam graduated from Tennessee Tech University in 1968 with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. He then started his career as a civil engineer at Boswell Engineers.He established a company named "AIA Engineers" in Houston, Texas in 1985, where under his visionary leadership, the company expanded from a single office to more than 200 offices in different states of the United States, Bangladesh and Canada.Then in 2018, his company was merged to form Consor Engineers and he is serving as the Chairman of this company till the current year 2024. During this long period he has been shaping the company's strategic direction and driving innovation in the engineering practice.

Ashraf Islam established the “Achia Khatun Memorial Trust” at Lake Circus Girls School in Bangladesh in honor of his late parents and the “Achia Khatun Civil and Environmental Engineering Endowment” at Tennessee Tech University to provide educational facilities and faculty development. Most recently, he made a groundbreaking gift to Tennessee Tech's new engineering building, and the university celebrated the grand opening of the Ashraf Islam Engineering Building on October 15.
