BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today urged the commissions to ensure public engagement in the reform process.
"Please create mechanisms for interacting with the people," he said.
He also said that reform commissions would have been more effective if they had discussed with political parties before submitting their reports to the government.
"We have heard that the commissions will prepare their proposals and submit them to the government, and then the government will discuss them with political parties. If discuss with political parties had been held beforehand, it would have been more effective and better," Fakhrul said this morning.
He made these remarks while speaking at a roundtable discussion titled "Unity, Reform, and Elections" at the Krishibid Institute in Dhaka.
"The commissions will discuss with the government, which will take time. In our view, the longer the time passes, the bigger the problems will grow," said Fakhrul.
He also raised questions about the implementation of the commissions' reform proposals, saying, "Who will implement these proposals? The administrations, government machinery is still not free from fascism."
Mirza Fakhrul has rejected claims that the BNP is opposed to reforms and insists that the party is in favor of elections.
He called such assertions "not true."
Highlighting the significance of elections in a democracy, Fakhrul said that the main gateway to a democratic system is elections.
"We have repeatedly said that we want to make the necessary reforms to ensure a fair election."
BNP has always been in favor of democratic reforms and will remain committed to this stance in the future, he added.
BNP senior leader said, "During our long struggle against fascism, many did not stand by us. However, we are now inspired as many are standing with us."
