A woman in Dhaka’s Savar area has lodged a general diary (GD) at the local police station against her husband, claiming he is a supporter of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and allegedly subjected her to torture.
Rahima Begum, 43, filed the general diary against Farhad Mia, 55, at Savar Model police station on Thursday night.
The mother of two said that she had been subjected to torture for 20 years, before serving her husband with divorce papers.
Rahima Begum, earlier, sought assistance on this matter from Dhaka District Police Superintendent Asaduzzaman.
“My husband Farhad often participates in BNP rallies. I asked him not to join these rallies. He used to assault me because I asked him not to participate in these rallies,” said Rahima Begum.

“I came from a family that supports Awami League. My father was a freedom fighter affiliated with the ruling party. His political alignment, coupled with physical abuse, led me to seek a divorce,” she said.
Rahima's husband, Farhad Mia, could not be contacted over the matter.
Savar Model police station Sub Inspector Harun Or Rashid said Rahima’s husband, Farhad Mia, is involved with the BNP, indulges in substance abuse, and resorts to violence against her, especially when he does not get money for his addictions.
“Following her GD at the station, the case has been handed over to the officer-in-charge of the Hemayetpur police outpost for investigation,” he said.
Necessary legal actions will be taken subsequently, he added.
